Janis Houston

Education:

  • M.A., Differential Psychology, University of Minnesota, 1982.
  • B.A., Psychology & Anthropology, University of Minnesota, 1974.

Background:

  • Since joining in 1976, Janis has been located in PDRI’s office in Minneapolis, and is now Vice President of Research there. She has led or been the key researcher on over 70 projects, mostly in personnel selection, performance measurement, and test/predictor development, validation, and implementation.

Client Experience:

  • For IBM, she led a series of projects resulting in a validated global competency model useful for multiple HR functions, and selection tools including written tests, interviews and role plays.
  • For a major manufacturing organization, she led the effort to develop selection tools including assessment center exercises and structured interviews.
  • For GTE, she led the GTEST project to develop and validate selection procedures for most non-management jobs, demonstrating criterion related validity using both synthetic validation and within-job-family approaches.
  • For a nationwide insurance company and a major airline company, she led projects to create and validate selection procedures, including cognitive tests, non-cognitive inventories, and Situational Judgment Tests.
  • Janis also directed the effort to develop and validate the Bell Atlantic Associate Interview, a modular structured interview protocol which was designed to supplement the UTB in employee selection.
  • She developed and validated another structured interview, the Occupational Selection Interview, for selection of non-salaried employees within the Southwestern Bell Company.
