The United Nations (UN) wanted to develop the knowledge and cognitive skills necessary for the training audience to evaluate microfinance operations. To achieve this goal, PDRI (PTI) developed a blended learning solution consisting of 9 hours of instruction and practice. Course conduct was synchronous on a lesson-by-lesson basis, moderated via e-mail by an instructor at the UN. Learners progressed through lessons in a workbook that introduced each computer-based training (CBT) lesson, provided additional reading resources, and presented exercises and essay-writing projects that the students completed and submitted to the UN instructor via e-mail. The CBT linked to Excel spreadsheets for some exercises, presented audio "interviews" with clients, officers, and staffers of hypothetical microfinance institutions, and provided access to anecdotal video interviews with international microfinance experts.
